Thousand Yard Stare
When I talk to people I don’t really talk to them
I look right through them
Sometimes they are aware
Of my thousand yard stare
But most of the time they ignore it
Because they don’t really care
Not a worry for how my mind might fare
In the world of distances and hurdles
I’m just looking ahead, I swear
That’s why I’ve got the thousand yard stare
The people I talk to on a day to day basis
Don’t understand my mentally deficient stasis
It doesn’t matter whatever the case is
Its all because of a world of shifting faces
Masking everybody else’s inner hatred
For my contemptuous thousand yard stare
How dare I try to be over there
A thousand yards ahead while pretending pay heed
To those in my present company
They all know I ain’t paying attention
Whatever the situation may be
I’ve seen too much in this life
I’ve got to slow it down for a while
My eyes will take a long time
To readjust away from the thousand yard stare
They’re used to looking way up over there
Where the grass is greener
The pain is leaner and the fun is cheaper
Past all the terror and hatred in between here and there
The distance traveled by the light my eyes take in and contemplate
That’s why I’ve got a thousand yard stare
